Course summary

Gain a thorough grounding in the basis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease by studying Biomedical Sciences at Royal Holloway, University of London.

This comprehensive programme will prepare you to join the ranks of biomedical researchers at the forefront of human health investigation. You’ll study biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, molecular biology and genetics before choosing from a range of optional modules in years 2 and 4, allowing you to specialise and follow your own particular interests.

As a 2nd and 4th-year student, you’ll receive specialist teaching from local health professionals, allowing you to learn more about subjects including neuroscience and clinical diagnosis of disease. You’ll have the option to embark on a lab-based individual research project in your 4th year, joining a renowned research culture that has seen former students contribute to published scientific papers.

You’ll benefit from a recent £16 million investment in state-of-the-art equipment for bioinformatics, mass spectrometry and protein and gene sequencing, as well as our excellent imaging facilities, including confocal laser scanning microscopes for 3D live-cell imaging.

Through your studies you will gain an impressive portfolio of transferable skills, making you an attractive prospect for potential employers. Invaluable lab experience, specialist learning and communication skills will help you to join our alumni in sectors including medical research, biotechnology and clinical trials coordination.

Our year in industry degrees are highly valued by employers and they give you the chance to gain first-hand experience of the world of work and to apply your learning to real-world scenarios. Your year in industry will start at the end of year 2.

  • Explore the function and integration of selected human physiological systems in normal physiology and disease.

  • Become familiar with molecular biology techniques.

  • Develop an understanding of the theory, technology, and clinical practice of human molecular genetics.

  • Carry out an individual laboratory or theoretical investigation under supervision.

A level - BBB - BBC

Where an applicant is taking the EPQ alongside A-levels, the EPQ will be taken into consideration and result in lower A-level grades being required. Socio-economics factors which may have impacted an applicant's education will be taken into consideration and alternative offers may be made to these applicants. Required subjects: Biology plus another Science from Applied Science, Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics or Psychology. A Pass is required in the practical element of all Science A-levels taken.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - Not accepted

Access to HE Diploma - D: 24 credits M: 21 credits

Pass Access to Science HE Diploma with at least 27 level 3 credits at Distinction, including all Biology and Chemistry units at Distinction and the remaining level 3 credits at Merit.

Scottish Higher - BBBBB

Subjects to include Biology plus another science from either Chemistry, Maths or Physics.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DM

Distinction, Merit in Applied Science or Health and Social Care and grade B in A-level Biology. A Pass is required in the practical element of all Science A-levels taken.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Certificate (first teaching from September 2016) - D

Plus grades BB in A-level Biology plus another Science from Applied Science, Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics or Psychology. A Pass is required in the practical element of all Science A-levels taken. A Pass is required in the practical element of all Science A-levels taken.

Scottish Advanced Higher - BBB - BBB

Subjects to include Biology plus another science from either Chemistry, Maths or Physics.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 30 points

5,5,5 at Higher Level including Higher Level Biology and a Higher Level in either Chemistry, Maths or Physics, OR a minimum of 30 points overall with SSRs achieved.

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)

Requirements are as for A-levels where one non-subject-specified A-level can be replaced by the same grade in the Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H2, H3, H3, H3, H3

Subjects to include Biology plus another science from either Chemistry, Maths or Physics.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

Applicants with the Cambridge Pre-U are strongly encouraged to apply to Royal Holloway. Offers will be made on the basis of equivalent A-Level grades as can be found on the Royal Holloway website.

T Level - D

T-Level should be in a Science Pathway with Distinction achieved overall, Merit in the occupation specialism and B in the Core Component.
