Course summary
The BSc Mathematics with a Year of Study Abroad is an exciting and challenging degree that will give you the skills to think logically, solve complex problems and explore the beauty and power of mathematics, while having opportunity to explore new cultures and practices in a different country for a year. You’ll build a strong foundation in core areas like calculus, algebra, and statistics, while having the freedom to explore topics such as operational research, mathematical modelling, mathematical analysis, and more. Along the way, you’ll develop valuable analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills that are highly sought after in industries like finance, technology, engineering, education, and research.
You’ll also develop skills in computer programming, working with others, and communicating your work in different ways to a variety of audiences. Whether you’re fascinated by abstract theory or eager to apply maths to real-world challenges, this degree prepares you to pursue exciting opportunities in a wide range of fields.
On this four-year course, you’ll study at a university abroad during your third year before returning to Cardiff for the final year. Our School has agreements with universities across the globe, and you will have support to apply for your overseas year.

Must include grade B in Maths.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
DD in a BTEC Diploma in any subject and grade A in A-Level Maths.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 34 - 31 points
34-31 overall or 666-665 in 3 HL subjects. Must include grade 5 in HL Maths or Maths Analysis and Approaches.
WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales
The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales will be accepted in lieu of one A level at the A level grades specified, excluding any subject specific requirements.
Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)
The Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate will be accepted in place of one A-level at the A-level grades specified, excluding any subject specific requirements.
Extended Project - A
For applicants taking the EPQ qualification, an A in the EPQ can be recognised to lower the entry requirements by a single grade. For example, an AAB offer would be “AAB from 3 A-levels or ABB from 3 A-levels and a grade A in the EPQ”. Please note that any subject specific requirements must be met.
GCSE/National 4/National 5
You must have or be working towards:
- English language or Welsh language at GCSE grade C/4 or an equivalent (such as A-levels). If you require a Student visa, you must ensure your language qualification complies with UKVI requirements.
T Level
Acceptance of T Levels for this programme will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Academic School. Consideration will be given to the T Level grade/subject and grades/subjects achieved at GCSE/Level 2.
We do not accept Critical Thinking, General Studies, Citizenship Studies, or other similar equivalent subjects.
We will accept a combination of BTEC subjects, A-levels, and other qualifications, subject to the course specific grade and subject requirements.
English language requirements
All applicants are expected to have demonstrable English language skills. Most courses ask for GCSE English grade C/4 or equivalent, but some courses ask for GCSE English grade B/6 or equivalent.

The University reserves the right to increase tuition fees in the second and subsequent years of a course as permitted by law or Welsh Government policy. Fees for entry in subsequent years are subject to increase and will be confirmed by the end of October in the year preceding your start date of your programme, or as soon as possible thereafter.
