The Joint Honours BA in English Language and Literature offers a rich interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates the analytical precision of linguistics with the interpretive depth of literary studies. You will engage with the structural foundations of the English language, whilst exploring its historical development and sociocultural implications. You will critically examine literary texts across genres, periods, and global contexts, supporting your understanding of narrative structures, identity, and representation.
This programme facilitates graduate attributes such as professional competence, global awareness, and effective communication and prepares you to address contemporary challenges within education, media, and culture.
In Year 1, you will typically study areas including: The Sound system of English; Theorising Gothic Texts; Grammar and Meaning; Approaches to Gender in English Literature; Language Teaching Methodology; Fundamentals of Creative Writing.
In Year 2, you will typically study areas including: Language Teaching in Context; Sociolinguistics; Child Language and Literacy; Research Methods and Tools for Applied Linguistics; Discourse Analysis; Teaching Practice (CELTA) B; Psycholinguistics of Bilingualism; World Englishes; Exploring the Bloody Chamber: Medieval to Postmodern; Writing a Short Film.
In Year 3: Modules will be dependent on which partnership University you choose to study at.
In Year 4, you will typically study areas including: Second Language Acquisition; Media Linguistics; Who Owns Language? Policy, Planning, and Social Impact; Applied Linguistics Dissertation; Forensic Linguistics; Stylistics; Language Technologies: Linguistics in the AI era.
