-Music and Media facilities have recently gone through a £1.7m expansion and improvement upgrade, including custom-built performance and recording spaces with three studios, a multi-purpose concert/recital room, an immersive multi-channel speaker performance space, five edit rooms, 11 practice rooms and brand-new synth lab.

What you will study
The Tonmeister degree is made up of three areas of study:

-Technical understanding of audio
-Practical experience of recording
-Musical theory and practice.

The technical aspects of our course cover the engineering components that contribute to modern sound recording and reproduction. This includes acoustics, electroacoustics, electronics, computer audio systems, sound synthesis and signal processing.

The practical elements of your studies will provide you with tuition in recording techniques and critical listening. You’ll also apply technical theory by recording a wide range of music.

The musical components of the course will develop your analytical skills and provide the opportunity for detailed study of creative disciplines such as performance and composition.

Qualification requirements

UCAS Tariff - Not accepted

A level - AAA

Overall: AAA Required subjects: Mathematics, Music, and Physics. Music Technology A-level together with ABRSM Music Theory grade 5 is acceptable in place of Music A-level. Applicants taking an A level science subject with the Science Practical Endorsement are required to pass the practical element. We do not include General Studies or Critical Thinking in our offers.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*DD

Overall: D*DD Required subjects: Please contact us to discuss suitability.

Access to HE Diploma - D: 45 credits

Overall: QAA recognised Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits at Distinction. Required subjects: Please contact us to discuss suitability.

Scottish Higher - AAAAB

Overall: AAAAB Required subjects: Mathematics, Music and Physics. Music Technology A-level together with ABRSM Music Theory grade 5 is acceptable in place of Music. GCSE or equivalent: English Language: Scottish National 5 - C.

Scottish Advanced Higher - AAA

Overall: AAA Required subjects: Mathematics, Music, and Physics. Music Technology A-level together with ABRSM Music Theory grade 5 is acceptable in place of Music A-level. GCSE or equivalent: English Language: Scottish National 5 - C.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 35 points

Overall: 35. Required subjects: Maths Analysis and Approaches HL6/SL7 or Maths Applications and Interpretation HL6. Admissions Tutor may be able to make exceptions for individual cases following interview. GCSE or Equivalent: English A HL4/SL4 or English B HL5/SL6.

WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales

Overall: Pass overall with AAA from a combination of the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales and two A-levels. Required subjects: Please contact us to discuss suitability. Please note: A-level General Studies and A-level Critical Thinking are not accepted. Applicants taking an A-level science subject with the Science Practical Endorsement are expected to pass the practical element. GCSE or equivalent: Please check the A-level dropdown for the required GCSE levels.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE English Language at Grade C(4) and Mathematics at Grade C (4) (or equivalent).

Applications are considered on an individual basis, taking into account qualifications achieved, predicted grades, personal statement and academic reference. Conditional offers are specified in terms of required grades; we do not make offers in terms of overall UCAS tariff.

We understand that predicted grades are an estimate and will consider applicants who have predicted grades that are a little lower than our published requirement. Any offers we make will align with the grades shown above unless a grade reduction can be offered under our Contextual Admissions policy or our In2Surrey scheme.
