Course summary
The MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a 5-year programme, which shares a common structure with the BEng degree for the first 3 years. Students study a broad-based range of topics from low current electronics to high power systems. At the end of year 3, candidates are selected to progress to the MEng course for a further 2 years of study.
During the 4th and 5th years, technical studies are advanced to a Masters level and the syllabus is greatly extended in the area of engineering management. A six-month industrial placement takes place over summer, after 4th year, and runs until the end of the first semester of the final year.
Year 1
Circuit Theory, Digital Design, Mathematics, Computer Programming and Electronic Design form the core subjects. In addition, students choose an elective option from a list that includes Mechanics and Physics.
Year 2
Further study of Electronic Design, Digital Design, Embedded Programming and Mathematics is complemented by introductions to Signals and Electromechanical Systems supported by appropriate lab and project work.
Year 3
Emphasis turns to design synthesis. Subjects include Energy Systems, Analogue Electronics, Electromagnetics, Physical Electronics and Communications. A quarter of the year is spent working on a large team-based project, incorporating Digital and Software Design, Mechanics and Management.
Year 4
Students work on a group project during both semesters and select taught topics from a list that includes Embedded Systems, Sustainable Energy and Power Systems, Communications, Image Processing, RF Communications, Analogue Electronics and Microwave Techniques.
Year 5
The summer and the first semester form a six-month industrial placement. During the second semester students choose from a range of advanced Electrical and Electronic Engineering topics.

in a relevant subject (including sufficient Mathematics and Physics) for entry to Year 1.
For entry to Year 2: DDD in a relevant subject (including sufficient Mathematics and Physics).
Scottish Higher - AAAB
to include Maths and one of Physics / Technological Studies / Engineering Science. Physics is preferred.
Scottish Advanced Higher - AB
in Mathematics and Physics plus AAAB at Higher for entry to Year 2.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 30 points
with Mathematics and Physics at Higher Level 5 for entry to Year 1.
For entry to Year 2: 34 points with Mathematics and Physics at Higher Level 6.
GCSE/National 4/National 5
It is also a requirement of every applicant to have English and Mathematics at a minimum of National 5 Grade C or GCSE Grade C or 4 (or equivalent)
Scottish HNC - Pass
HNC in a relevant subject (including sufficient Mathematics & Physics) with A in graded unit including SQA Engineering Maths 1 and one of Engineering Maths 2 or 3 for entry to Year 1.
Scottish HND - Pass
HND in relevant subject (including sufficient Maths and Physics) with BB in graded units including SQA Engineering Maths 1 and one of Engineering Maths 2 or 3 for entry to Year 1.
For Year 2 entry: HND in a relevant subject (including sufficient Maths and Physics) with AA in graded units.
Foundation Apprenticeship (SCQF Level 6) - Pass
We accept Foundation Apprenticeships in combination with other qualifications such as SQA Highers and Advanced Highers.
T Level
We will consider T Levels as suitable for entry to our degree programmes, however, certain subject requirements may be required for entry to specific programmes. Where this is not evident as part of the T Level studies, we may ask for additional qualifications.
We are always welcome to transfer students, including considering advanced entry to Year 3 for students with strong academic performance. Applicants interested in this route should be in touch directly with our Admissions team.

The University guarantees to make a minimum entry offer to anyone who would be considered a Home or Rest of UK (RUK) applicant and who has achieved, or can achieve, the required grades from the following categories:

English language requirements
Applicants whose native language is not English and who have not been educated previously in the English language must provide evidence of their English language ability to ensure they can cope with the demands of a Heriot-Watt programme taught and assessed in English.
