Course summary

This British Computer Society-accredited (BCS) Computer Science and Cyber Security MSci degree will equip you with highly sought-after computer science and cyber security skills.

Computer technology pervades almost every aspect of our modern lives - from the increasingly sophisticated electronic devices and software applications we use to the way we gather, store, process and analyse data. This means that security is an essential aspect of the design and maintenance of computer systems.

Our Computer Science and Cyber Security MSci degree will allow you to gain a broad understanding of key computer science topics alongside specialist knowledge through dedicated modules in the growing field of cyber security.

The first two years are the same as the Computer Science MSci, giving you a strong foundation in core computing concepts. In the third year, you will complete a major project and study advanced cyber security topics such as advanced networking, cyber risk management, digital forensics and cryptography. In addition to, a wide-range of specialist optional modules, you can explore other computing subjects in greater depth and keep up with the latest developments in established and emerging areas of the field.

The final year of the MSci provides you with substantial research experience (a thesis and a group project).

The course is taught by leading experts whose research informs the curriculum, ensuring you learn the latest techniques used in the UK and international cyber security industry. Throughout the degree, you will have access to excellent departmental resources including multiple dedicated computing laboratories and specialist lab facilities for robotics, networking, human computer interaction (HCI) and imaging technology.

What's the difference between MSci and BSc?

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree will provide a thorough grounding in the critical areas of the subject and enable you to develop skills and knowledge sought by employers in diverse industries. The Masters in Science (MSci) degree also provides an ideal preparation for research and development work in industry or for a PhD and is designed to create leaders in the subject area by giving in-depth experience of cutting-edge research.
