If you’re fascinated by the living world and want to share that passion with young people, our PGCE Science with Biology is your path to becoming an inspiring and confident secondary school science teacher.
This hands-on and engaging course prepares you to teach science at Key Stages 3 and 4 (ages 11–16), specialising in Biology. You’ll explore how to make topics like genetics, ecosystems and the human body come alive in the classroom, sparking curiosity and critical thinking in your students.
Led by expert tutors and experienced teachers, you’ll develop your subject knowledge, teaching practice, and classroom confidence through a blend of lectures, workshops, and school placements. You’ll also cover essential areas such as curriculum design, assessment, adaptive teaching and behaviour management, linking theory directly to your classroom experiences.
Our partnership with the Tump 53 Nature Reserve offers exciting opportunities for outdoor learning and fieldwork, helping you explore how conservation and ecology can enrich science education. Many of our mentors and tutors trained at the University of Greenwich themselves meaning they know exactly how to support you on your journey to becoming a great teacher.

Continuous assessment of classroom skills and teaching effectiveness builds towards a professional development portfolio. There are also written and practical assignments with opportunities for Master's level credits in the postgraduate version.
To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:
QUALIFICATIONS
• An undergraduate (honours) degree at 2:2 or above in a relevant subject
• In addition, you will need: GCSE Mathematics, GCSE English Language and GCSE Science all at grade 4/C. Equivalent qualifications may be considered.

• Suitable applicants will be required to attend an interview/selection day.
• Applicants will also be required to: Provide an academic or professional reference, Complete a Suitability Declaration, Pass an Occupational Health check, Pass an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
