Course summary

The aim of our HNC in Mechanical Engineering for England is to develop you as a professional, self-reflecting individual who is able to meet the demands of employers in the engineering sector and to adapt to a constantly changing world.

The objectives of this HNC Mechanical Engineering for England qualification are to equip you with the skills, knowledge and understanding that you need to achieve a high performance in the engineering and manufacturing environment.

This course will help you develop an enquiring mind, giving you the abilities and confidence to work across different engineering functions, lead, manage, adapt to change, and tackle a range of complex engineering situations. It will provide the core skills required for a range of careers in engineering, specifically those related to mechanical engineering and will offer a balance between employability skills and the knowledge essential for entrepreneurial, employment or academic ambitions.

It will develop your understanding of the major impact that new digital and software technologies have on the engineering environment. It also provides insight into mechanical engineering operations, along with the opportunities and challenges presented by a global marketplace. In addition, it equips you with knowledge and understanding of culturally diverse organisations, cross-cultural issues, diversity and values.

Assessment method

A wide range of assessment technique will be covered in this course ranging from scenario based course work and projects, practical work and demonstrations, to time constrained assessments and both groups and individual presentations. Units will be graded at an overall pass, merit or distinction (or fail if the learning outcomes have not been achieved).
The content and assessments are aligning to professional body competency standards, this supports students to develop as professional practitioners for the future.

The Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Engineering for England maps to the following Level 4 Occupational Standard:
Engineering Manufacturing Technician

Entry requirements

Our typical offer is Grade C/4 or above in Mathematics and English (or equivalent) and one of the following:

~ At least one A Level in a relevant subject (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering)
~ BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Engineering or a similar field
~ NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a related subject

Applicants over 21 years of age, who do not meet the above requirements will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis but should demonstrate evidence of an appropriate qualification, experience in the field or a strong interest.

AP(C/E)L & RPEL may be considered for non-standard entry.

Applications from students whose first language is not English are welcome. For International students we require evidence of proficiency in - English (including writing, speaking, listening and reading); the required minimum is IELTS (SELT) 6.0 overall (minimum 5.5 in all components).
