Course summary

Would you like to have a challenging and rewarding career where no two days are the same? We rely on public and emergency services, not only for major disasters such as tsunamis and earthquakes, but also more local concerns, such as anti-social behaviour in our community. This course will give you a strong practical and academic grounding in the organisation, management and operation of these services. Course Modules include: Year 1: Social Science; Public Affairs; Public Sector Organisation; Planning and Operations; Community Study 1. Year 2: Public Service Project; Public Service Law; Society and the State; Emergencies, Disasters and Transport; Work Placement. Work and study placements will further develop your skills and allow you to put theory to practice. They are also a good way of experiencing work in your chosen area before you graduate helping you to make the right decisions when applying for jobs after completing your course.

Assessment method

You will learn through a range of methods, usually a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops.

At later stages of the course, you will have the chance to work on projects, either individually or in groups. Outside activities are also built into the programme, as are guest speakers and project work.
