About this course
Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at Sussex explores the scientific basis of intelligence in animals and machines.
The course covers the fundamentals of computer science, the principles of adaptive behaviour and intelligent systems, and their applications. You can also apply for a year working in industry.
You can shape your degree to suit your interests, specialising either in technology or in cognitive science - the interdisciplinary study of intelligence and mind.
You’ll study in our Future Technologies Labs, which include a student-focused hub, teaching labs with suites of high-spec computers, and project workspaces.
Accreditation
Accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional.
To help you gain experience and increase your employability, you can apply for an optional placement as part of your course. This can be a fantastic opportunity to gain real-life insight into industry as well as skills valued by employers. You’ll be responsible for applying for and securing your placement. Qualification requirements
A level - ABB
You will also need GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics, with at least grade 6 (or grade B).
We will also consider applicants with grade 5 in Mathematics if you are taking A-level Computer Science, Chemistry, Maths or Physics.
You should also have a broad range of GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C), including good grades in relevant subjects.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDM
The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma would normally be in Computing or Information Technology.
You will also need GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics, with at least grade 6 (or grade B).
You should also have a broad range of GCSEs 9-4 (A*-C), including good grades in relevant subjects.
Access to HE Diploma
Pass Diploma with at least 39 level 3 credits at Merit or above including 24 credits at Distinction.
The Access to HE Diploma should be in Computing or Science.
You will need GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics, with at least grade 6 (or grade B).
Scottish Higher - AABBB
You will need Scottish National 5 in Mathematics at grade B.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 32 points
This score should be from the full IB Diploma.
Extended Project
We take the EPQ into account when considering your application and it can be useful in the summer when your results are released if you have narrowly missed the conditions of your offer. We do not routinely include the EPQ in the conditions of your offer but we sometimes offer alternative conditions that include the EPQ. T Level - D
including grade B in the Core Component.
The T Level would normally be in Digital Production, Design and Development, Digital Business Services or Digital Support Services.
You will also need GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics, with at least grade 6 (or grade B).
You should also have a broad range of GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C), including good grades in relevant subjects.
We do not expect applicants to have previous programming experience. We encourage applications from anyone who enjoys the challenges of problem-solving and relishes the potential of new technology.
