We recognise that there are many routes to success at degree level. This foundation year option provides an entry route for students from a wide range of backgrounds who may not have the traditional entry qualifications to join the first year of a Nursing or Midwifery degree. This foundation year will help you develop both personally and professionally, providing you with the tools to begin your journey towards becoming a competent, sensitive professional who can perform effectively in a variety of settings and work in collaboration with other professionals.
You will develop practical, technical and communication skills, and apply knowledge to real-life problems. You will gain awareness about the attitudes and behaviours required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to succeed on a professional programme, and in your future career. You will also learn about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and how these link to healthcare.
After successfully completing your foundation year. You'll gain the specialist knowledge and clinical skills needed to become a registered adult nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
The following years are highly practical, giving you hands-on experience. You'll spend 50% of your time on placement in hospitals, in the community and in our skills and simulation labs developing valuable hands-on skills. You'll work with patients, carers, clinical mentors and other healthcare professionals. Placement opportunities include medical and surgical wards, oncology, ICU, A&E, coronary care, operating theatres, district nursing, GP practice nursing and integrated community teams.
You'll learn in our award-winning simulation suite and experience a wide range of realistic environments, including hospital wards and community settings.
