Put your fascination with the past to good use by studying Modern Languages and History at Swansea University. You’ll build skills, valued across a range of sectors, while exploring the human condition across significant historical periods.
Our Modern Languages and History programme explores subjects including women’s history and gender, as well as British social history and the history of Europe. You will also study the rich diversity of your chosen language (French, German, or Spanish), at a level suitable to your existing knowledge, as well as modules in cultural studies, film, history, and language teaching.
Studying this degree opens up a range of exciting career opportunities by helping you to develop skills such as communication, cultural awareness and analytical thinking, which are highly valued by employers.
Our programme can be studied across three years, or you can extend your studies by a year to undertake a Year Abroad or Year in Industry. These additional options further enhance your student experience by giving you access to unique cultural insights and skill-based opportunities.
In Year 1, you will typically study areas including: From Facts to Fake News: Being a Historian in the Twenty-First Century; Global Challenges and the Historian; Beginners and Intermediate French, German, Spanish.
In Year 2, you will typically study areas including: The Practice of History; America in a Nutshell: A History of Pennsylvania from William Penn to Donald Trump, 1631-2016; The Making of Transatlantic America; The Heirs of Rome: The Making of Christendom, Byzantium, and Islam in the Early Middle Ages, 400-800; Europe 1500-1650: Renaissance, Reformation and Religious War; and more.
In Year 3, you will typically study areas including: French, German, Spanish Translation; French, German, Spanish General Language; Upper-Intermediate French, German, Spanish; French, German, Spanish for Professional Purposes; Teaching tools and materials - Design, evaluation and practice; and more.
We offer a variety of assessment methods within our programmes. In addition to traditional examinations and essays, examples of alternative assessment include:

• Oral Examinations
Throughout your undergraduate Modern Languages and History degree, you will develop excellent research and analytical skills and learn to present your ideas effectively both verbally and in writing.

Swansea University accepts the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales as fully equivalent to x1 A-Level.
We recognise the EPQ as an excellent indicator of success.
If you are predicted a Grade B or above in the EPQ, you will receive an offer with a one
grade reduction, to include your EPQ with a grade B.
Minimum grade C (4) in a modern foreign language is preferable but not essential.
All language applications will be considered on merit.
Our standard entry requirement is ABB-BBC (UCAS tariff points 112-128) or equivalent. All offers are made following a review of the application form, predicted/achieved grades and subjects, the reference and personal statement. We also accept a range of advanced level qualifications including: International Baccalaureate 32; Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales- grade equivalent to A-level; Access to Higher Education and Open University qualifications, and Extended Project.
