Course summary

Electrical engineers design and develop new technologies to generate and process power. The equipment they design is used to distribute electrical energy (including 'Smart Grid' technologies for renewable energy sources), and also supports many manufacturing industries.

Electrical engineering technologies now enable hybrid and electric vehicles, trains, ships and even aircraft.

Our course will give you the specialist electrical knowledge and skills that will help you be part of a more sustainable future. Through lab-based projects, working individually and in small teams, you'll learn essential problem solving and design skills.

By bringing together your numerical, analytical and technical knowledge, you will be confident in creating engineering solutions that industry are looking for.

All undergraduate students in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering initially follow a common programme of study, allowing them to change to a different plan up until the end of their third semester in year two. It is also possible to add or remove a year abroad and year in industry after joining the course. By year three, you can choose to specialise in the topics that interest you and suit your career aspirations.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDD

RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Engineering - DDD including Distinctions in modules Engineering Principles, Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems and Further Engineering Mathematics.

Access to HE Diploma - D: 24 credits M: 21 credits

Applications are assessed on an individual basis. Where an offer is made, 15 graded level 3 credits must be from acceptable maths unit achieved at Distinction.

Scottish Higher - ABBBB

This qualification is only acceptable when combined with Advanced Higher grades AB including mathematics and one of Physics, Electronics, Chemistry, Biology, Further mathematics or Computer science.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DD

RQF Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Engineering or Science - DD plus A Level Mathematics grade B.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (first teaching from September 2016) - D

RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in any subject - D plus A Level Mathematics grade B and A Level grade B in one of Electronics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Further Mathematics, Design and Technology: systems control or Design and Technology: design engineering RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Engineering – D plus A Level Mathematics grade B and A Level grade B in any subject.

Scottish Advanced Higher - AB

including Mathematics and one of: Physics, Electronics, Chemistry, Biology, Further mathematics or Computer science. This qualification is only acceptable when combined with Higher grades ABBBB.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 30 points

(or 655 in 3 Higher Level Certificates) including one of: HL5 Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, HL5 Mathematics Applications and Interpretation OR SL6 Mathematics Analysis and Approaches AND including HL6 in one of: Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Computer Science.

WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales

This qualification is acceptable when combined with A Level (or equivalent) qualifications that meet subject specific entry requirements.

Extended Project - A

If you have already achieved your EPQ at grade A you will automatically be offered one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject. If you are still studying for your EPQ you will receive the standard course offer, and also an alternate offer with a condition of one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject if you achieve an A grade in your EPQ. If you qualify for a contextual offer, your EPQ will be taken into consideration and the appropriate adjustment will be made to your offer. Please note that if you qualify for an enhanced contextual offer, your EPQ will not be taken into consideration as we are unable to make any further adjustments to your offer.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal - D3, M2, M3

including Mathematics and one of Physics, Electronics, Chemistry or Biology. Excluding Global Perspectives and Research

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE requirements - English grade 4 (alpha grade C).

T Level - D

in Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing and Control including A level Mathematics grade B. For applicants with T Level qualifications without A level mathematics the Foundation Year (H100) is recommended

European Baccalaureate - 75% overall including 80% (or 8.0) in Mathematics 5 and 80% (8.0) in Physics, Chemistry or Biology.
