Leading directly on to our highly regarded sport, health and social sciences courses, this one-year foundation programme will equip you with the skills you’ll need to progress on to a full degree. You'll be introduced to the expectations of university life and be supported in taking your first steps in - or returning to - higher education.

On this practical, career-focused foundation year, you’ll begin by studying a broad subject area, aimed at helping you to build your work-ready skills and personal development, while focusing on what it means to be a professional in the fields of sport, health and social sciences.

You'll then have the opportunity to delve further into your chosen pathway, exploring theoretical and practical foundations, and approaches to learning, while gaining an understanding of professional practice and career development in that subject area.

Who this course is for
The Health, Sport and Social Sciences Foundation Year is perfect for those who wish to study for a full honours degree in the areas of social sciences, sport, or health but might not meet the entry requirements. Upon completion of the foundation year, students will be able to progress directly on to the first year of one of our sport-, health-, or social sciences-related undergraduate degrees.

As part of this course, you will study one module at a time, giving you the chance to build a deeper understanding and see the results of your hard work more quickly. A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at PPP or BTEC Diploma at MP or equivalent.

We will consider mature students who haven't recently undertaken a formalised course of study at A-level or equivalent, but who can demonstrate relevant workplace or voluntary experience, indicating their ability to complete the course successfully.
We will also consider overseas applicants in an equivalent situation to UK students (as outlined above) and who have been taught in English or have IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio.
