On our MSc Medical microbiology course, you’ll develop an advanced understanding of the subject and gain the necessary skills for a variety of academic, research or clinical settings. You’ll develop an in-depth understanding of:
Human infectious diseases
Epidemiology, management and control of infectious diseases
Analytical approaches to research, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases
You’ll then complete an independent research project aligned to your interests. Supported by expert staff and using specialist laboratory facilities, you’ll gain hands-on experience and professional-level research skills. In the past, students have used this as an opportunity to collaborate with hospitals across Greater Manchester to further enhance their employability.

You’ll need a UK honours degree – normally a 2:2 – or the international equivalent, in biological or biomedical science, including the study of Medical Microbiology. We might also consider your application if you a have an equivalent professional qualification or substantial relevant professional experience, or if you have an HNC Medical Laboratory Science plus at least 10 years’ experience. If you are a fellow of The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), you may be eligible for exemption from some of the units on the course.
