Course summary

The purpose of Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Civil Engineering is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the construction sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.

Objectives include providing the core skills required for a range of careers in construction. A balance of employability skills and the knowledge essential for students with entrepreneurial, employment or academic ambitions will be offered.

The programme incorporates a combination of traditional classroom teaching, open learning and research based experiential learning, laboratory experiments and demonstrations, use of surveying equipment, industry standard IT applications and group activities. Many assignments are based around students' own work experiences.

Modules

The course requires 120 credits , comprising 8 x 15 credit units at Level 4 as follows:

Unit 1: Construction Design Project;
Unit 3: Science & Materials;
Unit 4: The Construction Environment;
Unit 8: Mathematics for Construction;
Unit 17: Civil Engineering Technology;
Unit 19: Principles of Structural Design;
Plus 2 additional optional units.

UCAS Tariff

GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in Maths and English AND one of the following: - a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Civil Engineering or other related Level 3 qualification - a GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. - an Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution - an international equivalent to the above qualifications. Mature students with relevant industrial background may also be considered subject to interview.
