A Masters by Research (MScR) programme is ideal if you would like to complete a short piece of independent research in Korean studies. The programme is a good stepping-stone to a PhD, but is equally of value as a stand-alone qualification.
An MScR programme is likely to suit you if:
you have a clear idea what you would like to write your masters dissertation about, right from the beginning of the programme
you would like to be part of a large and supportive postgraduate community, while working independently
On this programme:
you will take courses in research skills and methods
you will complete two research assignments, each of 6,000 words
you will write a 15,000 word dissertation under the guidance of an experienced and well-published supervisor
The Korean peninsula lies at the centre of landmark geopolitical developments in the early 21st century. An MScR in Korean studies gives you the knowledge and skills to critically engage with the complexities of the two Koreas, and East Asian relations, in a global context.
On this programme, you will be part of an Asian studies community at the University of Edinburgh with a unique combination of disciplinary expertise. We have particular strengths in:
modern Korean history
Korean society and culture
political economy
urban studies
security
public policy
political science
international relations
Our East Asian Studies Collection includes one of the largest collections of East Asian digital resources in the UK and Europe. It also contains a dedicated Korea Collection supported by the Korea Foundation.
