Course summary

MSc Chiropractic (Paediatrics)

The McTimoney College of Chiropractic, in partnership with Ulster University, offers a three-year, part-time MSc Chiropractic (Paediatrics) designed for qualified Chiropractors who want to confidently and safely care for children in clinical practice.

Programme Overview

This programme prepares you to deliver safe, effective, and evidence-informed chiropractic care to the paediatric population. You will develop the clinical judgement needed to recognise when referral to other healthcare professionals is required, while working within professional standards and legal frameworks.

Paediatric care is fundamentally different from adult care. Children are not simply smaller adults, they are individuals undergoing continuous growth and development. This programme reflects that distinction, equipping you with the specialist knowledge and skills needed to treat this unique population.

Why this programme matters

While Chiropractors have long treated children, formal postgraduate training in paediatric chiropractic remains limited. At the same time, the body of knowledge in this field continues to grow.

This MSc addresses that gap by providing:

  • A structured, in-depth approach to paediatric chiropractic care

  • A focus on safe practice and clinical decision-making

  • The opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development and standardisation of paediatric chiropractic care

A strong focus on safety

Patient safety is central throughout the programme. From the outset, you will explore:

  • Medico-legal responsibilities, including consent and duty of care

  • Safeguarding and child protection

  • Recognition of serious conditions requiring referral

  • Clear understanding of the boundaries of safe practice

This ensures you can assess, treat, and refer with confidence.

How you will learn

The programme is designed to balance academic rigour with real-world clinical relevance. It combines:

  • Blended learning
A mix of guided study, coursework, and clinical application

  • Summer Schools
Face-to-face teaching with hands-on skill development and direct feedback

  • Practice-based learning
Apply techniques and knowledge directly within your own clinical setting

  • Case-based problem solving
Work through real and simulated cases to develop clinical reasoning across a wide range of paediatric presentations

Progressive, integrated learning

Each stage of the programme builds on the last. Knowledge and skills gained in Year 1 underpin the more advanced clinical application in Year 2 and beyond, ensuring a coherent and progressive learning experience.

Designed for practising Chiropractors

This MSc has been developed specifically for Chiropractors in practice who regularly see paediatric patients. It supports you in:

  • Enhancing your clinical confidence and competence

  • Delivering high-quality, patient-centred care

  • Integrating new knowledge directly into day-to-day practice
