Summary

History helps you understand the world. Language helps you connect with it.

On this course, you will combine the study of history with a modern language, choosing from French, German or Spanish. By studying a modern language you'll also learn about and experience another culture.

You can begin a language from scratch or build on your existing knowledge. You'll get extra hours of teaching and funding for a language course abroad at the end of year 1 to make fast progress. Alongside your historical studies, you will gain insight into the culture, politics and ideas of the regions where your chosen language is spoken.

You'll build study and communication skills that are vital for success in the world of work. These include analysing and assessing a wide variety of viewpoints, presenting arguments in speech and writing, working independently and in cooperation with others, developing your ability to speak, read and write in your chosen language, learning how to do primary research by applying of a range of concepts and methods. This combination prepares you for a wide range of international opportunities.

Modules

Over the four years of this History course, you’ll combine your time studying history as well as linguistics, cultural studies, other languages, or modules from outside the department.

Year 1: Start to develop your language skills and get a broad introduction to the culture and history of this language.
Year 2: Further develop your skills in the language you chose to study. In history you’ll reflect on how historians translate academic knowledge into public history.
Year 3: Year Abroad
Year 4: Tailor your studies to your interests. You can choose to do a dissertation in History or your modern language.

You will also have opportunities to tailor your learning through student-selected units and an elective placement.

Scottish Higher

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).

Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"

Offers will be based on exams being taken at the end of S6. Subjects taken and qualifications achieved in S5 will be reviewed. GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 4/C)

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard.

The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
