The Global Development Futures MRes is a pre-doctoral training programme version of the Global Development Futures MA. Alongside the opportunity to challenge common ideas and theories about development and reconsider the diversity of populations, economies, cities and governance practices in the Global South, you will develop social science research skills and methods appropriate for further study in this field.
This MRes is a pre-doctoral training programme taught in conjunction with the London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS DTP) and is an approved pathway for ESRC 1+3 PhD studentship funding – ideal for those seeking to work in a research-related role. MRes programmes in the School of Geography have the same structure as the MA/MSc equivalents, but include two compulsory modules: 'Geographical Thought and Practice' and ‘Introduction to Social Science 2: Quantitative Methods and Data’.
This programme:
provides you with a detailed understanding of development practices and experiences within different sites and spaces of the Global North and South
encourages you to examine these realities in light of the contrasts and continuities between the Global North and South and critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of different theoretical approaches to studying development futures
provides you with the opportunity to develop your research skills and experiences by undertaking an independent research project and fieldwork. This work will be supported by research training as well as one-to-one tailored supervision from experienced researchers.
