Course summary

Mathematics underpins all contemporary science, business and technology. Our three-year BSc degree in Mathematics and Computer Science is a highly regarded programme that welcomes students from around the world.

Throughout your studies you will develop a solid grounding in the fundamental concepts of mathematics and computer science, covering a range of industry-relevant topics including modelling, graphics, security, data analysis, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

You will also have the opportunity to choose one of three key themes; Modelling and Simulation, Data Science and Logic, and AI, learing about the theoretical foundations, and developing the practical skills in programming and problem solving, to focus your interests and career prospects.

Your learning will be shaped by inspirational and internationally-renowned academics who have expertise in a range of topics, and you will study in bespoke teaching spaces, designed by, and for, mathematicians and computer scientists.

You will master the ideas and logic of mathematics and computer science, and their applications, with strong analytical skills, logical reasoning, data handling and quantitative thinking, building a highly desirable set of graduate attributes that will set you apart in the employment marketplace.

This course also offers you the opportunity to study with a Year Abroad, a Year in Industry and a Foundation Year.

Modules

In Year 1, you will typically study areas including:
Concepts of Computer Science, Introduction to Analysis, Foundations of Algebra, Introductory Linear Algebra, Introduction to Biomathematics, Probability and Statistics

In Year 2, you will typically study areas including:
Database Systems, Visual Computing, Game Theory and Optimization, Multi-variable analysis, Vector Spaces, Groups and Rings, Declarative Programming, Probability Theory, Artificial Intelligence

In Year 3, you will typically study areas including:
Dissertation in Mathematics and Computer Science, Embedded Systems Design, Applied Algebra: Coding Theory, Cryptography and IT-Security, Machine Learning, High Integrity Systems, Risk and Survival Models, Logic for Computer Science, Biomathematics

Assessment method

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Swansea University accepts the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales as fully equivalent to x1 A-Level.

English language requirements

For applicants whose first language is not English we require a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) and no less than 5.5 in each component.
