Course summary
Our Psychology with Counselling degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). On this course, you will learn about the key areas of psychological study, progressing to develop the skills and theoretical understanding needed for counselling careers. You will conduct research in different areas of psychology, including counselling psychology, within our dedicated laboratories.

In years 1 and 2 you will study the core areas of psychological science while practising your research skills in the laboratories every week. The research our academic staff carry out informs the things you learn. Some of these topics include:
Mental health and neurodiversity
Trauma and the therapeutic relationship
Cognitive neuroscience of language and memory
Social interaction and political psychology
Body image and bullying.
In year 3 you will specialise in counselling psychology. You will learn about the theoretical foundations of different counselling approaches, including psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive behavioural modalities.
As a psychology student, you will have access to our dedicated lab spaces. You will use our computer labs for research methods classes and our suite of research labs for collecting data. The research labs include:
EEG lab - for recording electrical activity in the brain
Eye-tracking lab - for monitoring gaze patterns with static or mobile eye trackers
Virtual reality (VR) equipment
Observation lab - including wall and ceiling-mounted cameras
A large collection of psychometric tests and questionnaires.
Our dedicated team of technicians will support you when working with equipment in the laboratories.
We focus on developing your employability throughout your degree. In our second-year module, Psychology in Practice, you will complete work experience in a field related to your ambitions.

Entry requirements for advanced entry (i.e. into Year 2 and beyond)
For Second Year entry, applicants must have completed the first year of Higher Education in a similar subject with a total of 120 credits.
For Third Year entry, applicants must have completed the first and second year of Higher Education in a similar subject with a total of 240 credits.
Applicants will need to submit a transcript of their completed study, and offers will be subject to a mapping exercise of modules to ensure an appropriate alignment of course content.
