Primary Teaching (SEND) (QTS)

The BA (Hons) Primary Teaching (SEND) (QTS) programme at the University of Chichester is designed to train you to become a fully qualified primary school teacher, focusing on children aged 5-11 (Key Stages 1 and 2). This three-year program emphasises both theoretical and practical aspects of teaching, providing students with the opportunity to teach the full range of subjects within the national curriculum. Undertaking a SEND subject study will also enable students an opportunity to explore key inclusion issues in order to enhance their understanding gained from the broader inclusion elements on the programme.

The course modules cover key components of teacher education such as professional studies, curriculum studies and classroom experience. These modules provide student teachers with the essential knowledge required to be a primary school teacher. You will learn what to teach (the curriculum), how to teach (pedagogy) and why you are teaching (values and aims of education) through engagement with research, theory and practice.

The SEND pathway through the primary teaching offers additional modules to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of SEND. These will include critical thinking about how the school curriculum can be enriched through a better understanding of SEND and how to promote best principles in SEND. Students will also have the option of undertaking part of their school experience in a SEND specialist setting.

The course takes student teachers from the foundations of good practice in the first year through to the final year of the programme where they can enrich their understanding through a range of optional modules. Assessments include essays, presentations, 1:1 discussions, coursework, and the creation of creative stimuli.

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:
