Turn your sporting passion into a dynamic career with UEA’s Sports Development with a Year Abroad course. Dive into our unique curriculum, supported by innovative teaching methods, hands-on research, and practical experience, to ignite your passion and prepare you for a successful career in sports development.

This course blends theory with practice to equip you with valuable skills. You’ll build a strong foundation in the fundamental principles of physical education, sport, and health, while studying the human body and the positive impact of physical activity on wellbeing. You’ll also explore the principles of sport and physical activity development, learn how to tackle inequalities through sport, and discover how to nurture elite athletes to reach their full potential.

Hands-on research and real-world experience are emphasised, and you’ll undertake a rewarding extended work placement to enhance your skills and employability in an area of your choice. You’ll be part of a unique community in Norwich and Norfolk, including UEA Sport, Active Norfolk, and even visits to Norwich City FC, all designed to enrich your learning, build networks, and broaden your horizons.

The course is taught by experts in sports participation, elite performance, athlete transitions, and gender equality, bridging theory with practice to offer cutting-edge insights. You’ll benefit from our state-of-the-art facilities, including the world-class Sportspark at the heart of our Active Campus. Additionally, you can enrich your studies with off-site trips to the stunning North Norfolk Coast, Thetford Forest, and local health and physical activity providers. In your third year, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner institutions across the globe. Previous students have studied in Europe, Asia, Australasia, and North America.

Upon graduation, you’ll be well-positioned to pursue a wide variety of careers, including sports coaching, sports development, sports performance, marketing, education, event management, or government roles. Placement provider information There may be limitations to placement activity for students under the age of 18 due to the professional nature of some of our partner environments. This can be mitigated around, including the opportunity to undertake professional development activity which is not age restricted. Social and Community engagement Students under the age of 18 are not permitted to compete in the national British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league system and may be restricted from joining some sports clubs until the time that they turn 18. Some sports clubs' social events may be restricted from U18 attendance due to their nature. Physical Testing volunteering There are some opportunities on the course to act as a demonstrator in laboratory environments and our ethical approval may restrict the ability for U18s to take these roles. Observational roles are always available. If you are under 18 you may wish to consider deferring. If you would like to discuss this please contact the Admissions Team.

Additional fee information

Tuition fees increase annually for all students in subsequent years of study. Any fee increase is based on the fee for the year that you register. Home undergraduate fees, whose rates are regulated by the UK Government, will be amended in line with any alteration advised by the UK Government. Fees not regulated by the UK Government will increase by a maximum of 4% or RPI-X whichever is the higher. RPI-X is the Retail Prices Index excluding mortgage interest.
