Course summary

This Higher National Diploma (HND) is designed to deepen your knowledge, skills and behaviours in line with the Occupational Standard (OS) for Operations Manager. The course builds strong foundations in leadership, operational planning, problem solving and strategic decision making, preparing you to take on roles that require autonomy, responsibility and confident judgement.

This course is ideal for:

Individuals aspiring to progress into management or supervisory roles

Current team leaders or supervisors seeking to formalise and enhance their skills

Employees looking to broaden their operational and strategic understanding

Individuals aiming to continue their studies at Level 6 or pursue Higher Apprenticeships

Throughout the programme, you will explore real world business challenges, apply theory to practice, and develop the ability to work effectively in complex and uncertain environments.

By the end of the course, you will have a solid understanding of leadership and management principles and the capability to apply them across a wide range of organisational contexts. You will be equipped to generate and evaluate ideas, analyse complex business situations, and apply both theoretical and practical approaches to organisational challenges. Completion of the course provides a strong platform for:

Entry into management positions requiring independent decision making

Progression to Level 6 Higher Education study

Higher and degree apprenticeships

Professional body qualifications in leadership and management

The course is delivered 9.00am - 4.30pm, on Thursday and Fridays. It will take one year to complete.

At Level 5, you deepen your understanding and begin applying strategic thinking to complex organisational challenges. You will study 8 units:

Managing and Leading Change
Principles of Operations Management
Business Strategy
Business Information Technology Systems
Developing Individuals, Teams and Organisations
Business Communications and Relationship Management
Business Data Analytics and Insights

Assessment method

All units are assessed through coursework assignments, which may include:

Written reports

Case study analysis

Presentations

Research projects

Practical or work related tasks

Each assignment is graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, allowing you to demonstrate your knowledge, application of theory and analytical skills at increasing levels of complexity. This assessment approach supports the development of real world competencies and encourages you to apply learning directly to business scenarios.
