Course summary

This Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) in Mechanical Engineering is designed to equip students with the advanced technical knowledge and practical skills required for a career as an Engineering Manufacturing Technician. Developed in collaboration with employers, the course aligns closely with industry needs and focuses on core mechanical engineering principles, manufacturing processes, materials science, CAD design, and quality control. Students will learn how to interpret engineering data, solve real-world problems, and contribute to the development and improvement of manufacturing systems.

The qualification blends classroom-based learning with hands-on practical work, preparing learners for skilled roles in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, energy, and advanced manufacturing. Emphasis is placed on professional behaviours, health and safety, and effective project management. On completion, students will be ready to enter the workforce in technician-level roles or progress to further study, including higher apprenticeships or degree-level engineering qualifications.
