The idea that we can combine robotic systems with artificial intelligence to produce a new generation of machinery is no longer the stuff of science fiction – it’s science reality. This cutting-edge course puts you at the heart of one of today’s most innovative fields, with a focus on developing your hands-on skills right from the start. Through understanding of theory, a practice-based approach and real-life work projects, you gain a solid conceptual grounding, to-the-minute specialist knowledge and advanced technical skills.

This course is fully accredited by the British Computer Society (BSC), the Chartered Institute for IT, meaning you qualify for chartered IT professional status once you graduate.

Modules

Course modules

Year 1

Engineering mathematics – Solve real-world engineering problems using different mathematical approaches. Mathematics and concepts for computational thinking - Apply maths-based coding skills to build software applications using programming languages like Python. Robot principles and design – Learn how a robot works as a mechanical device and create your own robot using 3D printing. Principles of programming and data structures - Develop your skills in using a high-level programming language and apply those skills to real-world problems.

Year 2

Concepts and technologies of artificial intelligence – Explore the main AI concepts and technologies typically used to solve real-world problems. Information security - Gain advanced knowledge of tools and techniques for cyber defence, threat intelligence and information governance. Desktop applications development and software engineering – Acquire strong programming skills for desktop applications, solving industry-relevant problems. Robot intelligent control - Design and implement intelligent control for robotic systems, including sensors, actuators and automatic control.

Year 3

Advanced robotics – Build your technical knowledge and hands-on experience in areas of robotics technology such as human-robot interaction and object/intention recognition. Agile project management – Gain valuable project-management skills for your graduate career. Research methodologies and emerging technologies – Plan your Honours project around current or emerging technologies, using research to back up your proposal. Undergraduate project – Work independently to develop and complete a major project on a topic of your choice, solving a complex problem.
