Course summary

Archaeology and History (with Foundation Year) at Lincoln Bishop University offers students the chance to explore the wonders of the past, from ancient civilisations to more recent history, through hands-on investigation of real artefacts and sites. The course is broad and ambitious, covering topics from the Black Death to Caribbean pirates, French revolutionaries to civil rights campaigners. Students discover how people lived, what shaped their beliefs, and how their actions have influenced the world today.

Lecturers on the course bring history to life in the classroom and on field trips, sharing their expertise and research. There are opportunities for practical experience through work placements, and assessments are designed to help students build the written, oral and digital skills valued by employers. This course encourages curiosity, celebrates individuality, and supports students as they shape their own futures.

If you don’t have, or don’t think you will attain, the normal tariff points for studying at Lincoln Bishop University, this course will enable you to study for a degree without any UCAS points. The course is delivered over four years and includes a Foundation Year, which gives you a perfect introduction to what it means to be a university student and prepares you for effective undergraduate study. In your Foundation Year, you will study eight modules, all of which are designed to equip you with the necessary academic skills and knowledge to progress successfully in your chosen subject. You will also engage in a series of bespoke subject sessions delivered by experts, designed to introduce you to your chosen subject area.

Assessment method

Assessment on this course is designed to help students develop key skills, knowledge and confidence for life beyond university. A wide range of methods are used, including written essays, presentations, portfolio submissions, debates and one-to-one discussions. History is rooted in written communication, so around half of assessments focus on expressing complex ideas clearly and persuasively. The capstone project, at the end of the degree course is the Dissertation, which allows students to explore a topic of their choice in depth, showcasing their research and planning skills.

Archaeology assessments include practical fieldwork, preparing students for careers in the sector. There are no unseen written exams; instead, assessments are tailored to support learning and growth. Students benefit from a supportive environment, with lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and field trips that bring history and archaeology to life.
