Our BA Theatre and Performance degree works with your interests to help you become independent, innovative theatre makers. At Northumbria, you will:
Learn through practice and be taught by award-winning, internationally celebrated lecturers in a student-centered teaching environment.
Develop skills and gain experience that prepare you for work in theatre, the creative industries, and beyond.
Work directly with industry professionals and gain real-world experience.
Develop a final year production, working as a small “theatre company” with your peers, positioning you as a future creative leader.
Our degree is practice-led, critically rich and grounded in the North East theatre industry. Our students and graduates work with venues like Live Theatre, Northern Stage, the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, as well as schools, care homes and local authorities. In fact, one of our graduates founded Newcastle’s highly successful Alphabetti Theatre, championing original work from emerging artists.
Extended Degree
This extended degree provides an alternative route to higher education and supports those who don’t meet the standard entry requirements for an undergraduate degree. It includes a foundation year which helps develop your skills, build confidence, and foster creativity. The extended degree gives you the chance to establish a strong academic foundation while exploring a wide range of creative art disciplines within film, media, and theatre.
What will I learn in my Foundation Year?
The foundation year of this course is dedicated to developing the fundamental skills needed to grow as a critical and reflective arts practitioner, covering practical, intellectual, and creative aspects. You will engage with topics such as effective communication, teamwork, time and project management, research, and digital literacy. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in dynamic and challenging studio environments. As part of the year, you will complete an assessed portfolio, which may include various components like performances, short films, artwork, and live practice.
The foundation year of the course delivered at level 3 which develops your ability to study in Higher Education is not accredited. Subsequent levels and years are accredited and deliver the knowledge, competencies, and skills required to meet the specific course accreditation requirements that relate to the approved accredited award title.
