Unlock the power of the past through public engagement
Are you ready to shape the way people connect with the past? The University of Chester’s MA in Public Archaeology offers you the opportunity to explore creative and impactful ways of engaging the public in archaeological research and practice, as audiences, collaborators, and co-producers.
This MA equips you with a critical understanding of how archaeology contributes to contemporary society, and how it can be shared in accessible and meaningful ways across diverse communities. You'll also gain valuable, hands-on experience through a professional work placement, offering practical insight into real-world public engagement and outreach.
Whether you’re looking to broaden your academic knowledge, take the next step towards a career as a public or community archaeologist, or progress to further research, this MA offers a supportive and exciting path into the field.
What you’ll learn
Delivered over three taught terms through a blend of lectures and seminars, this MA includes a series of core modules that will help you to establish a strong academic foundation in public archaeology. You’ll be introduced to key theories, concepts and debates, helping you to develop the critical thinking and analytic skills required at post-graduate level.
In particular, the Advanced Research Skills module introduces you to a range tools and methods, with opportunities to collaborate with students from our other History and Archaeology postgraduate pathways. This approach helps to broaden your perspective and strengthen your research capabilities.
The final term is dedicated entirely to your dissertation, an extended independent research project on a historical, archaeological, museum, or heritage-related topic of your choice. With guidance from experienced academic supervisors, this project allows you to explore an area you’re passionate about while building essential skills for future study or employment.
Learn in a city steeped in history
You’ll study in-person at our Exton Park campus, located just a short walk from the historic city centre of Chester. Surrounded by a wealth of Roman and medieval archaeology, the city provides an inspiring and immersive backdrop for your academic experience. You’ll also benefit from opportunities to engage with local museums, archives and heritage organisations during your studies.
Your future in public archaeology
Following successful course completion, graduates have gone on to pursue a research degree or secured jobs directly within the industry. This includes a variety of roles within heritage organisations, museums, the civil service, and even education sectors.
Chester’s award-winning Careers and Employability service is also available to provide personalised support throughout your studies, including CV writing, interview practice and exploring future career options.
