Course summary

About the course

BA Dance at Roehampton is a creative and practice based degree that explores dance as an artistic, cultural and professional discipline. The course is designed for students who want to develop as dancers, choreographers and reflective practitioners, while gaining a strong understanding of dance in contemporary performance contexts.

You will combine practical studio training with critical study, developing your creative voice and technical skills while engaging with dance as a form of expression, communication and social commentary.

What you’ll study

You’ll build a solid foundation in dance technique, choreography and performance, while gaining professional skills valued across the creative industries, including developing physical and expressive abilities, creating and analysing choreography, understanding dance in cultural and social contexts, and reflecting critically on your own practice and development.

Future opportunities

This degree prepares you for a range of careers in dance and the wider creative and cultural sectors. Graduates may go on to work in areas such as:

• Performance and choreography

• Community and participatory dance

• Arts education and outreach

• Creative production and project coordination

• Arts administration and cultural organisations

You will also develop transferable skills in collaboration, communication, creativity and self management that are valued across many professional contexts. Some graduates progress to postgraduate study in dance, performance, choreography or related subjects.

• Practical studio classes focused on technique, choreography and performance

• Workshops and rehearsals supporting creative exploration and collaboration

• Coursework based assessment including performances, reflective writing and creative projects

• Academic guidance and feedback to support your artistic and professional development

Digital learning resources are available to support your studies, including online materials and recorded content where appropriate.

Facilities

You will study in specialist dance facilities designed to support professional training and performance, including:

• Purpose built dance studios with sprung floors

• Performance and rehearsal spaces

• Access to technical and production resources

• Library and digital resources supporting dance and performance studies

These facilities provide an environment where you can train, create and perform safely and confidently throughout your degree.
