Course summary

This Foundation Year in Psychology is designed to prepare you for degree-level study in psychology and related disciplines. It provides a supportive entry point if you do not yet meet the requirements for direct entry onto a degree, or if you are returning to study.

During the year, you will develop the knowledge and skills needed to understand human behaviour and the factors that influence how people think, feel and act. You will explore key ideas from the social sciences and be introduced to psychology as a scientific discipline.

You will build a strong foundation in the social sciences while developing essential academic and professional skills such as communication, critical thinking, teamwork and independent learning. Through project work and practical activities, you will begin to explore real-world issues and develop your skills in research, analysis and problem-solving.

The programme provides a broad introduction to psychology and related disciplines, preparing you for progression onto a psychology degree, where you will study topics such as behaviour, cognition, development and research methods in greater depth.

The Foundation Year uses a range of teaching methods to support your transition to university-level study. You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and interactive activities, where you will explore key concepts and apply your learning to real-world questions.

You will study core topics that introduce you to the social sciences, alongside modules designed to develop your academic and professional skills and provide an introduction to psychology. Teaching is structured to help you build confidence in understanding human behaviour, working with information and developing your ability to think critically.

Throughout the year, there is a strong emphasis on developing your academic skills and preparing you for degree-level study. You will be supported to improve your approach to learning, including how to research, analyse information and communicate your ideas effectively.

Assessment method

Assessment varies across modules and may include coursework, reports, presentations and project work. You will receive regular feedback to support your development, with assessments designed to help you build confidence and prepare for the expectations of further study.
