Course summary

A career in uniformed public services can be highly rewarding, satisfying and fulfilling, giving you the opportunity to make a real and lasting difference within the wide community. Job security is generally high, with good starting salaries and the potential to advance further within your field.

There are more uniformed public services than you might think, including the Armed Services (Army, Navy and Air Force), HM Customs and Excise, police, fire service, security services, prison service, ambulance service, rescue services, the UK Border Agency and the coast guard.

Most of the uniformed services require skills and competence in:

  • Physical fitness

  • Communication skills, written and verbal

  • Numeracy

  • Decision-making ability

  • Good hearing and eyesight

  • Flexibility to work outside standard hours

  • Energy and resilience

  • Time management

  • Team player

  • Ability to work under pressure

Whether your ambition extends to entering the uniformed services such as the Police Force, Fire and Rescue Service, or Armed Forces, or the non-uniformed public services, our HND could provide the perfect platform to start your career.

You will explore the theory behind criminology, crime reduction and community safety, emergency planning, substance misuse culture, and justice and punishment. You will also learn about managing public sector finance, the psychology of human behaviour, and personal and professional development.

The course provides education and training for a range of careers in public services, including, for example, local government, Civil Service, public administration, the armed forces, police force, fire and rescue services, ambulance (not paramedic), prison service and the charity and voluntary sector.
