Course summary

About the course

BA Primary Education (QTS) is an Ofsted “Outstanding” teacher training degree that prepares you for a career as a primary school teacher. You will graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), a qualification to teach in England that is respected internationally.

Roehampton has over 180 years of teacher training experience, and in 2023 Ofsted rated our primary age courses Outstanding across all areas. You will complete 24 weeks of school placements in three diverse settings, supported by expert mentors and over 400 partner schools.

What you’ll study

You will specialise in either Foundation and Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Modules may include:

• How Children Learn

• Discovering the Curriculum

• Block School Experience

Across the degree, you will study core subjects including English, Mathematics and Science, the wider curriculum, and key areas such as behaviour management, SEN/D and EAL.

How you’ll learn

You will learn through lectures, small group seminars and independent study, alongside extensive school placements each year.

Intensive Training and Practice weeks focus on areas such as phonics, questioning, subject teaching and behaviour strategies. Attendance of at least 95% across taught sessions and placements is expected.

How you’ll be assessed

Assessment reflects real teaching practice and includes lesson planning tasks, reflective activities, portfolios, essays and group work. These are designed to develop both your academic knowledge and your classroom confidence.

Future opportunities

You will graduate fully qualified to teach across the primary age range in maintained, independent or specialist settings. Graduates also progress into roles in special educational needs, children’s services, charities and policy, or continue into postgraduate study.

Facilities

You will benefit from access to the Froebel Archive, a state of the art library, and dedicated subject rooms designed to mirror real classrooms, ensuring you graduate confident and classroom ready.
