Course summary

The integration of AI-driven technologies into traditional engineering sectors presents challenges, particularly in recruiting engineers with both sector specific and AI knowledge.

The MSc in Engineering with Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a one-year full-time postgraduate taught programme, designed to equip students from traditional engineering backgrounds and related disciplines with the skills and knowledge to apply artificial intelligence in engineering.

You will finish your study with multi-disciplinary research project in one of a wide range of application areas and will enrol in three core units covering the foundations and applications of AI. The foundation units will teach students the needed programming skills, introduction to machine learning models and the use of industry standard AI infrastructure.

In addition, students will complete 3 specialised units focusing on different aspects of AI in Engineering, covering AI usage in engineering applications, AI technologies commonly used in Engineering and the impact of AI on society. The capstone is an industry-directed group project aligned to the students' chosen engineering discipline.

The programme will be delivered using a combination of lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, and independent and group research. The mode of delivery will be on-campus. Units will be assessed using a combination of written exams, coursework assignments, and the final project. A distinguishing feature of the programme is an emphasis on the link between traditional engineering disciplines and the emerging field of artificial intelligence.

The programme is designed to address real-world challenges while equipping you with practical AI skills, enabling graduates to continue working in their core engineering disciplines with enhanced expertise in AI.

The University of Bristol is the host of the Isambard-AI, the UK's most powerful AI supercomputer ranked 11th fastest in the world. It is a national facility for AI research and is designed to help solve some of the biggest problems in the world today with AI. For suitable research projects that align with the purpose of the supercomputer, students on this programme may be allowed to access some compute time on Isambard-AI.

Teaching for this postgraduate programme will be delivered at our new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, opening 2026. Home to our pioneering research groups and designed to enhance links with industry in collaborative spaces, students will gain the networks, skills and knowledge to succeed once you graduate. Depending on your choice of optional units, you may also be taught on the Clifton Campus.
