Course summary

The Honours Degree in Sustainable Agriculture is validated by Ulster University. This Honours Degree is particularly relevant to those interested in agriculture and the environment or agriculture and business as two pathways are available; Land Management or Agri-business Management. Students select the pathway they wish to study at the end of the second year of the course. Provision of optional modules/pathway is subject to demand. The course offers students the opportunity to complete one year of work-based learning which can be completed in Northern Ireland or further afield.

Year 1:
• Academic development and professional skills
• Animal science
• Arable crop studies

• Grass and forage production and mechanisation
• Livestock husbandry health and welfare

Year 2:
Students study five core modules and select one optional module as indicated*
• Developments in agriculture
• Farm buildings and mechanisation*
• Financial management on farm
• Future challenges for agri-food
• Introduction to organic production
• Research skills and data management
• Sustainable crop production systems*
• Sustainable pig and poultry production*
• Sustainable ruminant production systems*

Work placement:
Students have the opportunity to complete a period of 48 weeks working in an agriculture based business during Year 3 of the course. On the successful completion of the work placement module students will be awarded a Diploma in Professional Practice or a Diploma in Professional Practice (International) if the work placement has been completed outside of the UK and Ireland.

Offer: 104

Students should normally have at least 104 UCAS tariff points at A2 Level (including a Science subject**, preferably Biology or Chemistry) plus four appropriate GCSEs or equivalent, including English Language and Mathematics at Grade C or above.

Applicants applying with acceptable subjects must have attained a GCSE Grade C in Double Award Science or in two other separate science subjects.

Applicants entering with a relevant City and Guilds Technical or BTEC qualification must attain a minimum overall Distinction Merit Merit (DMM).

Applicants are normally required to have at least three months relevant practical experience.

In addition to meeting the course entry requirement applicants must meet the General Entrance Requirements for Ulster University.

Enhanced entry criteria may be applied subject to demand for this course.
