Understanding the movement of language and concepts across time and space is at the heart of the BA in English Literature with German. Our innovative and diverse degree programme combines historical depth with geographical breadth, exploring literature from across the globe and in a range of forms from every period.
Alongside modules in English and related literature, each year you will take two modules in your chosen language. This combines in-depth study of cultural and social phenomena and practices of communities and territories where these language are spoken, including their transnational and diasporic manifestations, with the development of sophisticated bilingual communication skills.
Supported by world-leading researchers, you will take an active role in determining your course of study, refining your own areas of specialism, managing exciting projects, and developing a sophisticated critical practice. Along the way, you will develop invaluable skills in communication, creativity, leadership, and collaboration, while building expertise in analysis, research, and project management that will serve you in any number of careers.
Our graduates are highly sought after in a range of fields, including journalism, education, arts management, writing, translation and publishing, media, marketing, and business. Studying English Literature with a Language at York will challenge and inspire you, and prepare you to operate in international, transnational, and multilingual professional environments in both public and private sectors.
An optional year abroad will help you develop transferable skills, such as adaptability, resilience and resourcefulness, which will empower you to engage confidently in transcultural encounters. Taking it in a country of your language of study will additionally enable you to develop rapidly in fluency and communicative proficiency, and it will help you gain first hand experiences on transcultural and multilingual competencies.
