Course summary
This full-time course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to practice as a Paramedic. On successful completion of the course, graduates will be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for registration as a paramedic. The course offers education and training in the rewarding, challenging and diverse role of a paramedic, teaching the essential emergency and urgent care skills that are needed for safe care delivery.
The programme is delivered in partnership with the West Midlands Ambulance Service who will provide you with experiential learning in the out-of-hospital unscheduled care environment. You will also have opportunities to develop skills in simulation and experience placements in the wider NHS. This course will prepare you for key aspects of the paramedic role including public interaction, contributions to all aspect of community and out-of-hospital care, and working in demanding conditions and challenging environments.
Values consistent with the NHS constitution will be sought from applicants at interview.

Qualification requirements
UCAS Tariff - 112 points
- Other Level 3 qualifications are accepted for entry. A minimum of 112 UCAS Tariff points will be required.
A level - BBC
- One subject from the following: Biology, Chemistry, Health and Social Care, Psychology, Physics or Social Science.
Subjects not accepted towards the BBC grade profile are Critical thinking, General Studies and the Extended Project.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM
o In a Care, Health, or Science subject (public uniformed services is not acceptable).
Access to HE Diploma - D: 30 credits M: 0 credits P: 15 credits
o 112 UCAS Tariff points from either a Health of Science subject which must include a minimum of 30 level 3 credits at Distinction
o Applicants who achieve an Access to HE course stated above are not required to also have GCSE Science grades 9-4/A*-C or equivalent.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*D*
o In a Care, Health, or Science subject (public uniformed services is not acceptable).
GCSE/National 4/National 5
o GCSE: English language, maths, and Science grades 9-4/A*-C or equivalent
o Science grades accepted are as follows: Biology, Chemistry, Health and Social Care and Psychology.
o Applicants who achieve an Access to HE course stated above are not required to also have GCSE Science grades 9-4/A*-C or equivalent.
o Equivalent qualifications include the following at Level 2:
o Functional Skills, Key Skills, Learn Direct.
o Equivalency Test: If you have not achieved your Level 2 qualifications, you are eligible to take our University equivalency tests. The tests for this course are free of charge and can be taken completely online. Our admissions team will confirm in your offer if you are required to take one of these assessments.
T Level - P
o Pass grade profile with a core component score of A* in Health or Healthcare Science

- A satisfactory DBS Police check will be required.
- Health checks
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and Occupational Health Check: Due to the professional nature of this course, you are also required to complete a Declaration of Health and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check. We will coordinate both non-academic condition checks if you accept an offer with us. The DBS cost is currently £46 in total.
- Interview
- Interview: Our Admissions team will use the entry criteria and your application information to shortlist successful candidates. If you are successful you will be invited to select an interview date through e:Vision. Your interview will consist of assessment in comprehension, verbal ability, and suitability for Paramedic Science. Interview panels will include, whenever possible, employer and service-user/carer representatives.
- Other
- Free Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and Occupational Health Check: Due to the professional nature of this course you are also required to complete a Declaration of Health and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check. We will coordinate both of these non-academic conditions with you should you accept an offer with us. There will be no cost for the DBS this is free to applicants who have secured a Conditional offer and have chosen to study at the University of Wolverhampton. References & Personal Statement: Satisfactory references are a condition of the programme. This will normally be from your educational institution, work, or voluntary experience. The University reserves the right to request an additional reference where appropriate. Applicants will also be required to provide a satisfactory personal statement. Health and social care are a vital role in the work of a paramedic, and it is important that you can demonstrate this and your experience or attributes towards caring and compassion. Voluntary or work experience: You must demonstrate that you have had some personal, voluntary, or work experience in a customer care or health related field. We would regard this as anything that involved attending or working with people or patients in need of caring services. It does not have to be full time but should demonstrate that you have had some exposure to this type of experience where you are able to demonstrate or develop your caring and compassionate aptitude towards those in need of care.
