Course summary

If you enjoyed studying Mathematics at school and would like to study the subject in more depth, you should consider G100 or G101.
G101provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of careers. Students who opt for the four-year MMath programme are well placed to embark on a PhD or to take a research post in industry after graduation.
In the first two years of these programmes, you will study a range of topics covering important areas of both pure and applied mathematics – no assumptions are made about whether or not you have previously studied mechanics or statistics, or have previous experience of the use of computers. Year One modules introduce fundamental ideas and also reinforce A level work. Subsequently, you can either specialise or continue to study a broad range of topics. For both of these programmes, you will take at least two modules of pure mathematics and two of applied mathematics in Year Two.

This programme is accredited to meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

Work placement/Year in industry - Students are encouraged to gain relevant work experience to enhance their employability by applying for a summer internship or a year placement with an approved company/organisation. Whilst the Department of Mathematics and the University will provide the necessary support and guidance, it is the responsibility of the student to secure an industrial placement. Applicants should note that industrial placements are highly sought after and competition to be accepted into one can be significant. They therefore cannot be guaranteed. Students who fail to secure a suitable placement offer will transfer back to the standard version of the programme without a year in industry. If you wish to study this programme with a Year in Industry please put the option code YI in the Further Choices section of your UCAS application

This programme is available with either a Year in China or a Year Abroad. The Year in China offers undergraduate students the opportunity to spend one year at our joint venture, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), following XJTLU's BA China Studies degree classes. XJTLU is a fully English-speaking university, located in Suzhou. The Year Abroad offers students the opportunity to spend a full academic year studying at one of our partner universities around the world, following a mixture of culture and/or discipline-related modules. If you wish to study this programme with a Year in China or a Year Abroad you will have the opportunity to apply after you arrive at Liverpool.rm.

Including A level Mathematics at grade A Applicants must have studied Mathematics at Level 3 within 2 years of the start date of their course. For applicants from England: Where a science has been taken at A level (Chemistry, Biology or Physics), a pass in the science practical of each subject will be required.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*DD

D*DD in relevant Diploma and A level Mathematics grade A

Access to HE Diploma - D: 33 credits M: 12 credits

Pass Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject with 45 Level 3 credits, with 33 at Distinction (including 15 credits in Mathematics) and 12 at Merit.

Scottish Higher - Not accepted

Scottish Advanced Higher - ABB

Including grade A in Mathematics

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 32 points

32 points overall with no score less than 4 including 6 in HL Mathematics, or pass the IB Diploma plus 6,5,5 in three HL subjects (including 6 in HL Mathematics).

WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales - B

B in the Welsh Baccalaureate, plus AB at A level (including grade A in Mathematics).

Extended Project - A

Applicants who offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and meet our offer criteria will be made the standard offer, plus an alternative offer. This will be at one A Level grade lower plus a grade A in the EPQ, for example the offer would be ABB or ABC plus A in the EPQ, including grade A in Mathematics.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H1, H2, H2, H2, H3, H3

including Mathematics at H1.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE Mathematics and English at grade 4/C required. Applicants with equivalent qualifications or who do not meet these GCSE requirements will be considered on an individual basis according to their circumstances.

Additional fee information

If this is your first degree and you are a Home student applying for entry in 2026, you do not have to pay your fees upfront. Instead, you can take out a tuition fee loan which is paid straight to the University. This is available to most students, no matter what their household income.

Please note, for Home undergraduate students, 2026/27 fees have yet to be confirmed. Tuition fees are subject to increase each year, subject to the government’s regulated fee limits. For information, for UK students applying for 2025 entry the Tuition Fee was £9,535.
