Course summary
Studying Celtic Civilisation immerses you in the history of the Celts, the development of their societies, their literature, material culture, art and religion, from earliest times on the European continent to the present-day British Isles. English language and linguistics combines the study of the structure and meaning of the English language, past and present, to see what all this tells us about our culture, our society and ourselves.

You will have the opportunity to study the medieval and modern cultures of Celtic speaking peoples, with scholars at the cutting edge of research, as part of a joint degree, with no requirement to learn a Celtic We have been teaching English Language and Linguistics for over 75 years and our staff are leaders in their fields.
We created the world-leading Historical Thesaurus of English, a unique resource charting the semantic development of the huge and varied vocabulary of English, and we have dedicated laboratories for analysing spoken and written language.

As a graduate in English Language & Linguistics you will be an expert in language, communication and the rigorous analysis of texts and events in the real world. You will have a broad range of career opportunities, drawing on your research skills and knowledge, as well as graduate attributes applicable to a variety of professional contexts Our graduates find jobs in traditional and new media, publishing, marketing, speech therapy and dictionary-making, and many of them teach English as a foreign language, often in Europe, Asia or South America.
