Course summary

Our innovative four-year MPharm programme, designed in partnership with pharmacy experts, prepares you for the evolving role of the modern pharmacist – one who isn’t only a medicine expert but also a key player in multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Blending cutting-edge science with hands-on clinical training, this degree offers an integrated learning experience that takes you from the fundamentals of drug discovery and design through to delivering safe, effective, patient-centred care.

Qualification requirements

UCAS Tariff - Not accepted

A level - AAB - AAB

including Chemistry and either Biology or Mathematics, and one further A Level excluding General Studies/Critical Thinking. Applicants with the Extended Project Qualification at Grade A will be reduced to ABB. You may automatically qualify for reduced entry requirements through our contextual offers scheme. For applicants from England: Where a science has been taken at A level, a pass in the Science practical of each subject will be required

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*DD

D*DD in a science-based subject (must include Biology or Mathematics) with A-level Chemistry at grade B or above. BTEC National Diploma D*D in a Science based subject (must include Biology or Mathematics) with A-level Chemistry at grade B or above. We accept the BTEC National Extended Certificate at grade D in lieu of the third A level only. It must be offered alongside A level Chemistry and either A-level Biology or Mathematics at grades A/B.

Access to HE Diploma - D: 36 credits M: 9 credits

Access to HE Diploma (QAA regulated): 45 graded Level 3 credits, with 36 at Distinction and 9 at Merit. 15 Distinctions are required in each of Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics. Applicants must also have 5 GCSEs at a minimum of Grade C (Level 5) including English language, Mathematics and Science.

Scottish Higher - AAABB

AAABB to include Chemistry and either Biology or Mathematics

Scottish Advanced Higher - ABB

Advanced Highers: ABB to include Chemistry and either Biology or Mathematics OR Highers: AAABB to include Chemistry and either Biology or Mathematics OR Mixed: Advanced Highers at AB, plus Highers at AB. A mixed presentation must include Chemistry at either Higher Level (Grade A) or Advanced Higher Level (Grade B), plus Biology or Mathematics at either level.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 34 points

34 points overall with no score less than 4 including 5 in Higher Level Chemistry and 5 in Higher Level Biology or Mathematics OR Successful completion of the IB Diploma plus 6,6,5 in 3 Higher Level subjects including 5 in Higher Level Chemistry and 5 in Higher Level Biology or Mathematics

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024) - B

Grades AA at A Level including Chemistry and either Biology or Mathematics, plus an B in the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H1, H1, H2, H2, H2, H3

Leaving Certificate: 6 Higher Level subjects to be gained at a single sitting including English and Mathematics. 2 subjects at H1 grade to include Chemistry and either Biology or Mathematics. Plus 3 subjects at H2 grade and 1 subject at H3 grade.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

6 GCSE subjects grade A*-B/Level 6 including English Language, Mathematics and two Sciences from the following: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Core Science, Additional Science and Dual Science. Standalone English Literature is not accepted in lieu of English or English Language at grade B (GSCE). Applied GCSEs will not be considered.

T Level

T levels are not currently accepted.

Academic reference An academic reference must be included within the UCAS application. If the applicant as a graduate and has been working since graduating (within three years), an employer reference is acceptable.
Profession-specific knowledge and skills required. As well as a strong academic background, candidates must show evidence, via
interview, of a good understanding of the scope of pharmacy practice. It is recommended that prospective applicants obtain work experience in a range of pharmacy settings. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate some knowledge and understanding of ,the NHS Core Values as outlined in the NHS constitution.
Health screening The University and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has an obligation to undertake health screening on all prospective healthcare students. Any offer of a place to study is conditional on completion of a health questionnaire and a satisfactory assessment of fitness to train from the University’s Occupational Health Service. This will include some obligatory immunisations and blood tests.

Additional entry requirements

Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland)
You will understand that as a pharmacy student, and when you qualify, you will be asked to treat children and other vulnerable people. We therefore need information about any criminal offences of which you may have been convicted, or with which you have been charged. The information you provide may later be checked with the police. If selected for interview you will be provided with the appropriate form to complete.

Interview
If you are assessed as suitable you will be invited to a selection interview. All applicants will be required to be interviewed online, or in person at the University in exceptional circumstances. The interviews will assess whether your values and behaviours align with those of the profession and the NHS values through a range of scenarios.

Additional fee information

If this is your first degree and you are a Home student applying for entry in 2026, you do not have to pay your fees upfront. Instead, you can take out a tuition fee loan which is paid straight to the University. This is available to most students, no matter what their household income.

Please note, for Home undergraduate students, 2026/27 fees have yet to be confirmed. Tuition fees are subject to increase each year, subject to the government’s regulated fee limits. For information, for UK students applying for 2025 entry the Tuition Fee was £9,535.

Some of our programmes charge less than the full £9,535 fee:

• Psychology BSc (Hons) (2+2 programme with Foundation element), run in collaboration with Wirral Metropolitan College.
• Programmes with a year in industry or a year abroad

Some programmes which include compulsory fieldwork or additional elements such as the Pilots Licence in Aerospace Engineering may incur additional costs. Where this is the case, those costs will be outlined at on-campus events such as the University Open Days or Applicant Discovery Days.
