By specialising in Civil and Structural Engineering at The University of Manchester, with the invaluable addition of a year spent in industry, you ready yourself for both a varied and rewarding career. You will find the first two years of your study are broad, spanning everything from structural analysis, hydraulics, geotechnics, and mathematics, to construction materials, engineering design, and project management.
As you develop, the level of flexibility you possess to steer your interests with optional subjects will grow – popular choices including renewable energy systems, fire engineering, earthquake engineering, and computational hydraulics.
It’s after your second or third year that you will embark on a year working in the civil engineering profession – a structured industrial placement assessed and monitored by the department, with support in finding your placement provided. By year three, you will undertake an individual research project on an emerging topic in the field. By year four, will undertake an industry-supervised group design project, and crucial units on advanced structural analysis and design.

Scottish Advanced Highers are normally required in one of the following combinations:
Three Advanced Highers with grades AAA, including Mathematics and Physics.
or
Two Advanced Highers with grades AA in Mathematics and Physics and two Highers with grades AA in additional subjects.
English Language and Mathematics not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must have been achieved at SCQF level 5 (minimum National 5 grade C / Intermediate 2 grade C / Standard Grade Credit level grade 3).
We require a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma (a minimum of 60 credits overall and at least 45 at Level 3).
The specific requirements are: 45 graded credits at Level 3, with a minimum of 15 credits at Distinction and 30 at Merit; with Distinction in Mathematics and Physics modules. We also require A-Level Mathematics at Grade A.
Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education, typically five GCSEs/IGCSEs, including acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy, equivalent to at least Grade C/4 in GCSE/IGCSE English Language and Mathematics. GCSE/IGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/IGCSE English Language.

We accept Mathematics: analysis and approaches or Mathematics: applications and interpretation.
The University welcomes and recognises the value of the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma/Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate and consider this alongside two A-Levels or equivalent.

The University recognises a number of foundation programmes as suitable for entry to this undergraduate course.
Applicants completing the INTO Manchester in partnership with The University of Manchester International Foundation Programme are required to achieve grades AAA, including Mathematics and Physics. We also require grade B in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or EAPPU, with all sub tests at Grade B.
Applicants completing the NCUK International Foundation Programme are required to achieve AAA, including Mathematics and Physics. We also require grade B in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or EAPPU, with all sub tests at Grade B.
We will accept both Integrated Mathematics and Technical Mathematics.
