In choosing to study Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) degree at Aberystwyth University, you will be immersed in the fundamentals of computer science and the very latest techniques in AI. With core coverage that includes operating systems, telecommunications, database management, HCI, Agile methodologies and object orientation and an in-depth study of a wide range of AI and Machine Learning techniques the structure of this degree in Computer Science allows you to develop the skills needed to solve challenging and complex problems.
At Aberystwyth University, we endeavour to provide you with an exceptional and memorable student experience. By studying this degree, students will have access to dedicated Linux, Mac OS X laboratories and central servers as well as robotic equipment including Ardvinos, mobile robots and sailing robots.
Our degree is accredited by the BCS (the Chartered Institute for IT) on behalf of the Engineering Council, which gives you a head start when you enter the competitive job market. You will be taught by lecturers who have close links with the industry and software engineering conferences.
Computer Science and AI involves the development of AI systems and is becoming increasingly relevant in commercial and domestic life. Examples of current and emerging AI systems include data mining in huge data sets, supply chain management systems, time series prediction, and many others. On this course, you will participate in a fascinating and commercially important field of research. You will gain a firm foundation in computing skills such as programming, software design, and computer architecture, and will learn specialised skills in the areas of AI and interaction with related areas of study, such as intelligent agents in games programming and mobile computing.
Studying for a degree in Computer Science and AI will equip you with a range of transferable skills which are highly valued by employers. These include: research and data analysis, mathematical and computational skills, independent and team-working, organisation, implementation and self-motivation. The University operates a Year in Employment Scheme (YES), which offers you a fantastic opportunity to take a year out between your second and third year to work in an organisation in the UK or overseas. YES provides a very rewarding and worthwhile experience and can help you to stand out from the crowd in a very competitive job market. GO Wales is administered by the University’s Career Service and works with local businesses to create paid work placements for students. It helps you gain valuable work experience which will enhance your CV.
Alongside the skills necessary for most typical jobs in the software industry, your degree will give you an advantage in fields such as data mining and optimisation. In addition, you will acquire transferable skills, such as communication and problem-solving abilities, needed for success in a wider range of careers.
