Course summary

Health visitors are key to improving the health and wellbeing of families from pregnancy to starting school. They promote health, prevent ill health and reduce inequality (Source: Health Careers). There is soaring demand for health visitor support and large gaps in provision across the UK (Source: Saphna survey, Jan 2025).
Our course will help you graduate as a specialist community public health nurse. We focus on three themes:

  • promoting child health and wellbeing in a global society;

  • supporting children and families with complex health and enhanced support needs;

  • improving the outcomes for care experienced children and those in need of protection.

Close links with practice partners
Our teaching team has close working partnerships with our practice partners. This ensures our curriculum reflects up-to-date standards and practice. We develop our curriculum with:

  • NHS partner organisations (NHS Forth Valley, NHS Tayside, the Highland Council and NHS Western Isles);

  • the Care Inspectorate;

  • people who use health services.

Masterclasses and practical learning
We focus on equipping you with the skills and learning to become a health visitor.

  • Masterclasses delivered by experts providing real-world experience and up-to-date research. Recent examples have included experts in perinatal mental health and trauma informed practice.

  • Experience work-based learning opportunities such as placements, collaborative business projects or internships.

  • Learn from group projects, problem-based learning and simulations.Develop career management skills to plan and manage your career.

  • Network with professionals, practitioners or those in industry.

  • Develop personal skills such as communication, project management, leadership, confidence and time management.

Flexible design to enhance your professional practice
This health visitor qualification has flexibility and student support built into its design. This allows you to align your individual learning needs with key learning outcomes.
You can take any of the current modules as part of your continuous professional development (CPD).
The course is online but we provide on-campus days to support your training and ensure you feel part of the learning community. Students are provided with excellent support in both academic and practice settings.

Assessment method

A combination of assessment methods will be used across the modules of the course reflecting the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) level of the course of study.

Entry requirements

To gain entry to the MSc/PGDip Early Years Practice (Health Visiting), you must meet the following requirements.

Valid registration as a nurse on Part 1 and/or a registered midwife on the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register. We would welcome applications from nurses working in all fields of nursing (Adult, Child, Learning Disability and Mental Health) and midwives.
The ability to study at degree level (minimum academic level SCQF Level 9) (NMC 2004; Standard 5).
Demonstrate knowledge, skills and competence beyond your initial NMC registration, i.e. normally two years’ post registration experience as a registered nurse or midwife-however, other relevant professional experience can be considered. Each individual application is considered on their own merit.
In order to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) practice requirements for the programme, you’ll need to be supported by an NHS Health Board/LA in an approved practice with a nominated practice assessor and practice supervisor. The placement will be negotiated between the University and NHS health boards and local authorities.
In order to be a registered Nurse or Midwife you will already have been required to prove your English language ability to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
