This course will prepare you for a special and rewarding career as a midwife, helping expectant mothers on their maternity journey. You’ll learn both the theory and the practice behind pregnancy, through to childbirth and the postnatal period. You’ll develop the skills to help mothers with not only the physiological but the psychological process of childbirth. You’ll also gain an understanding in situations that are considered normal as well as training for those with more complex needs.
Throughout the degree, you’ll gain real-life experience and put your skills to practice in a variety of maternity settings. Plus, in your final year, you’ll be provided with the opportunity to showcase your proficiency by being the lead professional in the care of a mother with a low risk pregnancy. With an 100% employment success rate within 6 months of graduating, you’ll leave a confident, caring practitioner, ready for a successful career as a midwife.

• Foundation science, knowledge and practice

• Normal physiological childbirth and universal care
• Public health, health promotion and health protection
• Introduction to midwifery practice (Year 1 Practice)
Year 2
• Understanding and applying evidence in practice
• Altered maternal health, childbearing and the midwife
• Maternal mental health and psychological issues
• Developing competent midwifery practice (Year 2 Practice)
Year 3
• Quality improvement in practice
• Midwifery management of maternal and neonatal emergencies
• The systematic examination of the newborn infant
• Promoting excellence in midwifery practice
• Proficient midwifery practice (Year 3 Practice)
This course has restrictions on who can apply.
The following entry points are available for this course:
112 UCAS Tariff points from an Access to HE Diploma in Midwifery or related subject area.
Applicants must hold GCSEs A-C in Maths, English Language and Science or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above).
English Language Requirements for International and EU Applicants: IELTS 7.0 (the minimum score required in each skill area is 7.0)
