Course summary

This HND in Civil Engineering builds on the Level HNC in preparing students for a career in the construction sector, by acquiring knowledge, understanding and developing skills that underpin the study of civil engineering. Problem solving is a very important skill and you will develop critical thinking and analytical skills, to be able to apply the UK and EU codes of practice and industry standards, learned on the course. The areas of maths and science which support engineering principles, will be studied along with management techniques and subjects that will increase your awareness of the economic and commercial context of engineering processes.

You will acquire knowledge of various aspects of the civil engineering field; in particular, in-depth theoretical knowledge of structural design and analysis, as well as an understanding of concrete technology. Exposure to setting-out processes and surveying, will equip students with the principles of mapping and land surveying. You will learn about the different construction methods that may be adopted on different projects, and you will become familiar with equipment available to perform on-site work. You will have the opportunity to explore geotechnical aspects within the geology and soil mechanics unit, with practical work on sieve analysis and soil sheer strength.

On successful completion of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma, students may choose to complete a Level 6 top-up degree in a related field and/or professional qualifications.
On completion, students may develop their career in this sector by entering or continuing employment in roles such as: Construction Management, Surveying, Environmental engineering, Structural Design, Project Planner and Structural Engineer.
1 year full-time with two full days attendance per week. (12 hours).

At Level 5 you will gain 120 credits from 8 units of study.
