Course summary

Our MEng Software Engineering degree can also be taken with an additional year in industry. The year in industry is taken after Year 2 or Year 3 and is assessed by academics and industry experts. This can be a great way to give you a competitive edge among graduate recruiters by showing you can relate your academic skills and knowledge to contemporary industrial practice.

Our distinctive MEng Software Engineering degree builds upon the BEng Software Engineering and will enable you to adapt software engineering to new technologies and challenges to create the next generation of software systems. You'll learn to develop the core professional skills, knowledge and understanding that underpin the software engineering industry, including programming, software design, analysis, quality assurance and project management. Key areas of specialist study include critical systems, web development, advanced databases and scripting languages.

Our MEng in Software Engineering with Industrial Studies is accredited by the British Computer Society and by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Modules

The programme is designed to give you experience of core technologies and techniques, while making it possible for you to work in depth and specialise in what really interests you by focussing your studies in one of six specialist areas (Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed Systems and Networks, Image and Multimedia Systems, Mobile and Secure Systems, and Cyber Security) through our themed degrees.

Our project work will enable you to acquire valuable skills in teamwork, project planning, time management and presentation, applying your learning to design and build problems, and working to a brief, and we also offer the opportunity to spend a year in industry as part of our “with Industrial Studies” variant degrees.

Assessment method

A range of assessment methods are used on this programme to enable students to demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes. These include written examinations and assessments, in-class tests, design exercises, programming exercises, oral presentations, assessed laboratories and group work exercises.
Our project work will enable you to acquire valuable skills in teamwork, project planning, time management and presentation, applying your learning to design and build problems, and working to a brief. We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).

Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"
