Course summary

Gain industry insight through paid placements, internships, and school-based opportunities, supported by our dedicated Employability and Careers Service.

Our BSc Computing (Extended) degree is designed for students who would benefit from an additional year of study to build confidence and develop essential academic and technical skills before progressing to Year 1 of the full degree.

In your foundation year, you'll be introduced to key computing concepts, problem-solving techniques, and academic study skills that will prepare you for success in higher education. From Year 1 onwards, you’ll explore core subjects such as software development, hardware systems, and business-oriented computing.

The course offers flexibility to tailor your learning to your interests and career goals, with specialist pathways available in areas such as information systems. You’ll graduate with the skills and experience needed to pursue roles in software development, IT consultancy, and technical support.

To enhance your employability, you can choose to take the course in sandwich mode, which includes a paid year-long industry placement before your final year. Short-term placements in schools or colleges are also available for students interested in teaching. Many students also take advantage of summer internships, supported by the university’s Employability and Careers Service, which offers CV clinics, mock interviews, and skills workshops.

Graduates have gone on to work with organisations such as Oracle, Kent Connects, and the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development. This course is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and fully meets the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered IT Professional (CITP).
