Course summary

This programme brings together product design creativity with the technical knowledge and skills of engineering. Students develop as technically competent industrial designers, benefiting from the very latest in new product development techniques. The result is a modern engineering degree that will equip you with an excellent technical and creative grounding for a successful career in designing and developing new products. The degree is strongly project-based. You will work on many design projects of increasing complexity. In Year One, you will also study core engineering subjects. It gives you a broad and extended education at an advanced level, combining user-centred product design creativity with key aspects of engineering. You will graduate well-placed to play an important role in new product development, a top management priority in industry today.

This programme is accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional.

A level - AAB

Must include Mathematics or Computer Science. (Mathematics (Pure), Mathematics (Pure and Applied), and Mathematics (Pure) & Statistics are acceptable.)

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*DD

D*DD in a relevant diploma plus A level Maths or Computer Science grade B (GCSE Maths grade A/7 required if A level Mathematics not taken). Relevant diplomas are: Computer Science Mathematics Engineering IT BTEC National Diploma plus one A level DD in BTEC and A in A Level in Mathematics or Computer Science. BTEC National Extended Certificate plus two A levels D in BTEC and AA in A Levels (to include either Mathematics or Computer Science).

Access to HE Diploma - D: 36 credits M: 9 credits

Pass Access with 36 Level 3 credits at Distinction (including 15 in Mathematical or Computer Science credits) and 9 Level 3 credits at Merit Open Awards Access Diploma in Computing and Digital Technology is not acceptable as there isn't enough relevant content

Scottish Higher - AAABB

Higher grades AAABB + Advanced Higher grade A in Maths or Computer Science

Scottish Advanced Higher - AAB

Including Mathematics or Computer Science.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 34 points

34 points overall or 6,6,5 in 3 HL subjects including Mathematics/Computer Science.

WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales - B

Acceptable at grade B (with A levels AA including Mathematics or Computer Science)

Extended Project - A

Applicants who offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and meet our offer criteria will be made the standard offer, plus an alternative offer. This will be at one A Level grade lower plus a grade A in the EPQ, for example the offer would be AAA or AAB plus A in the EPQ.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H1, H1, H2, H2, H2, H3

H1,H1,H2,H2,H2,H3, including H1 in Higher Mathematics or Computer Science. We also require a minimum of H6 in Higher English.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE Mathematics and English at grade 4/C required. Applicants with equivalent qualifications or who do not meet these GCSE requirements will be considered on an individual basis according to their circumstances.

T Level

Science or ICT T Level alongside A level Mathematics or Computer Science only.

Additional fee information

If this is your first degree and you are a Home student applying for entry in 2026, you do not have to pay your fees upfront. Instead, you can take out a tuition fee loan which is paid straight to the University. This is available to most students, no matter what their household income.

Please note, for Home undergraduate students, 2026/27 fees have yet to be confirmed. Tuition fees are subject to increase each year, subject to the government’s regulated fee limits. For information, for UK students applying for 2025 entry the Tuition Fee was £9,535.
