Course summary

This exciting skills-based programme meets the requirements of one of the fastest growing, dynamic and entrepreneurial sectors in the creative industries. Providing practical specialist knowledge to pursue a career in the game industry in paths such as an animation, level design, coding, 3D modelling. concept art or texturing etc. Core artistic and technical skills will be developed to enable creation and building of games and content for a variety of platforms. As a games student you will be creating stunning and immersive worlds, VR experiences, characters and other games assets, in a variety of styles ranging from the realistic to cel shaded.

Many of the modules include live client and competition-based briefs, often these are international as well as national. The course has excellent links to industry for example; Epic, Antimatter Games, Goldfinch Entertainment; Sony; Tiger X, Sanders Studios, British Armed Forces, TKUK and many others. Input from these have informed the structure of the course ensuring all you learn is relevant in obtaining your dream career.

You will gain an understanding of the broad areas of games development, ludology, VR, concept work, 3D modelling and animation, level creation, character design, motion capture, history, contextual and social issues, together with an overview of the more technical and creative aspects of the games design pipeline. Software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Autodesk (3D Studio Max, Mudbox, etc), Construct 3 and Unreal Engine amongst others are explored in depth, along with how to use typical industry hardware such as VR headsets and audio equipment.

Studies include formal lectures, practical workshops, trips to EGX Rezzed (London) and industry based assignments, exploring numerous aspects of digital gaming within a combined creative and technical framework; real-world tasks; creating real products through competitions, live client briefs and for the college’s own games design company; establishing a strong portfolio; web presence and showreel towards future employment. The experience is relevant and realistic and regular pitch and presentation practice prepares you for a career in the industry.

The flexibility within the curriculum enables students to realise their specialist skills in an area of interest early on. Team work is present in many modules reflecting what is required in industry. Dynamic assignment briefs stretch and challenge students, whilst allowing for creative freedom and experimentation, within a “safe” environment. Making mistakes often leads to innovative gameplay.
